Rug Pads for Tile & Stone Floors

Tile and stone are the hardest, coldest floors in the house, and grout lines telegraph straight through a rug. A pad is doing three jobs here: cushioning, warming, and smoothing out the ridges so the rug lies flat.

Which pad should I use on tile or stone?

Premium is usually the right answer on tile and stone. It is our thickest at 0.25″ and densest at 38 oz per square yard, which is what you want when the floor underneath has no give at all. It also does the most to level out grout lines.

Superior is the sensible middle. At 0.160″ and 30 oz it still adds real comfort over a hard floor, and it costs less. If the tile is large-format with tight grout lines, Superior is plenty.

All-Purpose works when you need a low profile — 0.10″ thin, for entryways and thresholds where a thick pad would lift the rug into the door swing. Fiber side faces up.

Bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas

These pads are made for dry indoor floors. If the rug is somewhere that gets properly wet — a shower surround, a mudroom that sees snow boots — the Deluxe Outdoor pad is the better choice, because its open weave lets water drain through instead of holding it against the floor.
