Rug Pads for Carpet

An area rug on top of carpet creeps, rucks up, and curls at the corners. It happens because there is nothing for the rug to hold on to — the carpet pile moves with it. The fix is a pad used the opposite way round from normal.

Use the All-Purpose pad, fiber side down

Our All-Purpose pad is the one to use over carpet, and this is the important part: put the fiber side facing down into the carpet and the rubber side facing up against the rug. The needled fiber grips the carpet pile, and the rubber holds the rug. Used the right way up, it does very little on carpet at all.

At 0.10″ it is also our thinnest pad, which matters here — you are already adding the rug's own height on top of carpet, and a thick pad would leave you with a soft, unstable stack that rolls underfoot.

Why not the felt pads?

Superior and Premium are built for hard floors. Their felt cushion is doing a job the carpet is already doing, and their rubber backing needs a smooth surface to grip. On carpet you would pay more for less hold. We would rather sell you the cheaper pad that works.

Low-pile vs plush

This works best over low-pile and berber carpet. On deep plush or shag, no pad fully stops a rug moving — there is too much give underneath. If that is what you have, talk to us first rather than ordering and hoping.
